The Medicines Patent Pool’s patents and licences database, MedsPaL is a free resource that provides information on the intellectual property status of selected HIV, hepatitis C, tuberculosis and other patented essential medicines in low- and middle-income countries.
MedsPaL was launched in October 2016 focusing on medicines for three diseases: HIV, hepatitis C and tuberculosis. In December 2017, it was expanded to cover patented medicines of the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines (WHO EML), such as those for the treatment of cancer. Following the release of the updated WHO EML in July 2019, MedsPaL was updated in October to include patent information on 18 newly listed medicines.
The database includes patent and licensing data covering over 8,000 national patent applications on 100 priority medicines (200 formulations) in more than 130 low- and middle-income countries. We collaborate with the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO), the European Patent Office (EPO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and several national patent offices around the world to collect information for the database.
